Air India’s US$400 Million Fleet Retrofit Programme Elevates Passenger Experience and Aircraft Reliability

Air India has taken a decisive step in its transformation journey by launching a US$400 million aircraft retrofit programme. The airline aims to deliver a world-class flying experience and improve operational reliability across its legacy fleet, reinforcing its position as a premium global carrier.

Air India Begins Widebody Aircraft Cabin Upgrades

Air India has started retrofitting its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner fleet, sending the first aircraft (VT-ANT) to Boeing’s Victorville facility in California in July 2025. The airline plans to send a second aircraft in October, with both returning to service by December 2025.

The retrofit introduces a three-class cabin layoutBusiness ClassPremium Economy, and Economy Class—across all 26 Dreamliners. Air India is installing:

  • Brand-new seats in every cabin
  • Advanced inflight entertainment (IFE) systems
  • Refreshed interiors including carpeting, curtains, and upholstery
  • Modern lavatories and galleys

These upgrades align with Air India’s new brand identity and customer experience standards. The airline expects to complete the Dreamliner retrofit programme by mid-2027.

Air India Plans Boeing 777-300ER Retrofit from 2027

Air India will begin retrofitting 13 Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in early 2027, aiming to finish by October 2028. Although supply chain delays have shifted the timeline, the airline remains committed to delivering a consistent and premium onboard experience across its widebody fleet.

Air India Enhances Reliability of Dreamliner Fleet

To boost reliability, Air India has launched a Reliability Enhancement Programme for its B787-8 aircraft. The airline is:

  • Upgrading avionics and critical systems to meet the latest industry standards
  • Reviewing maintenance and configuration records
  • Implementing Boeing’s recommended service bulletins

Air India will also conduct D-checks on seven Dreamliners at Victorville, ensuring long-term performance and reducing service disruptions.

Narrowbody A320neo Retrofit Nears Completion

Air India continues to upgrade its 27 legacy A320neo aircraft, having started the retrofit programme in September 2024. With a third maintenance line added at GMR’s MRO facility in Hyderabad, the airline has already retrofitted 16 aircraft.

  • The 15th aircraft re-entered service on 9 August 2025
  • The 16th aircraft will return on 11 August 2025
  • The remaining 11 aircraft will be ready by September 2025

Air India is deploying these upgraded A320neos on key domestic and short-haul international routes, offering passengers a refreshed cabin experience and improved comfort.

Final Thoughts

Air India is actively modernising its fleet to meet global standards and elevate the passenger experience. With widebody and narrowbody upgrades progressing steadily, the airline is well on its way to becoming a world-class international carrier, blending Indian hospitality with cutting-edge aviation technology.
