Etihad Secures 32 Additional Airbus Widebodies, Accelerating Fleet Growth

Etihad's Widebody Fleet Expansion

Etihad Airways has announced a major fleet expansion, securing 32 additional Airbus widebody aircraft in a strategic move that positions the Abu Dhabi-based carrier among the fastest-growing full-service airlines globally. This latest agreement brings Etihad’s total new widebody commitments for the year to 60 aircraft, following an earlier order for 28 Boeing jets.

Early Delivery Slots – A Competitive Advantage

The new Airbus order includes a mix of A350-1000s, A350F freighters, and A330-900s, acquired through direct purchase and lease agreements. Deliveries will begin in 2027, giving Etihad access to one of the earliest widebody availability windows worldwide. In a market where long-haul aircraft backlogs often stretch beyond a decade, this achievement underscores Etihad’s ability to act decisively and secure scarce capacity.

Agility in a Constrained Market

Etihad’s rapid execution reflects its agile growth strategy, enabling the airline to lock in competitive advantages through early access to long-haul aircraft. By securing some of the last remaining early delivery positions worldwide, Etihad ensures its fleet expansion stays ahead of global supply constraints, positioning the airline for sustained growth in both passenger and cargo segments.

Fleet Flexibility Across Passenger and Cargo Operations

The combined Airbus order provides Etihad with unmatched flexibility:

  • A350-1000s will bolster long-haul passenger capacity, supporting Etihad’s premium travel ambitions.
  • A350F freighters will strengthen Etihad Cargo’s footprint in global trade flows, catering to rising demand for air freight.
  • A330-900s will serve mid-haul and regional routes, bridging network gaps during a period of constrained widebody supply.

With this addition, Etihad will operate the entire Airbus widebody family, including the A380, A350 variants, and A330neo, alongside its growing Boeing fleet.

Commitment to Abu Dhabi’s Aviation Future

Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, stated:
“Securing 32 additional widebodies – with deliveries beginning in 2027 – demonstrates Etihad’s ability to move fast, secure scarce delivery positions, and stay ahead of global capacity constraints. These commitments ensure we can continue our growth trajectory, deliver more premium experiences, and bring even more visitors to Abu Dhabi.”

Neves emphasised that these investments reflect confidence in Abu Dhabi’s aviation future and Etihad’s role in positioning the emirate as a leading global hub.

Next-Generation Passenger Experience

All new aircraft will feature Etihad’s next-generation First and Business cabins, enhanced Economy seating, and Viasat high-speed internet. Combined with the airline’s ongoing retrofit programme, this ensures a consistent, world-class experience across its expanding fleet.

Airbus Partnership

Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales, commented:
“Etihad Airways’ continued investment in our latest-generation widebody aircraft is a testament to the strength of our partnership and the shared vision we have for the future of aviation in the UAE and beyond.”

Building One of the World’s Most Modern Fleets

With 60 new widebody aircraft ordered in 2025 across Airbus and Boeing, Etihad is on track to operate one of the most modern, efficient, and flexible long-haul fleets globally. This strategic expansion not only supports Abu Dhabi’s connectivity ambitions but also reinforces Etihad’s commitment to sustainability and premium service.
