The Air India Express Flying Canvas: Meet the Artist
First, to pull off a huge project like this, you need a bold artist. Enter Osheen Siva. She is a famous modern artist known all over the world. Furthermore, her art proudly blends history, identity, and the future. She imagines what traditional culture will look like years from now.
For this project, Siva created a stunning original artwork. It covers the entire body of the plane. So, what does it look like? Mainly, the design features a strong Tamil figure. This figure carries memories and heritage into the future. Additionally, the art includes traditional patterns. These patterns stand for family lines and identity. As a result, the design shows Indian history as a living, growing force. Truly, it is the fastest-moving art show in the world!
✈️ The “Tales of India” Story
If you have flown with the airline recently, you probably noticed their planes looking very sharp. Back in October 2023, the brand was refreshed. At that time, they launched the Tales of India program.
Until now, this program only focused on the airplane tails. For example, every new plane featured a custom tail design. These designs were inspired by India’s rich crafts and arts. You might have seen tails showing bright makeup of Kathakali dancers. Or, you might have seen beautiful textile patterns like Kalamkari and Bandhani. Some even show famous paintings by Raja Ravi Varma or proud tributes to national monuments.
Now, the Air India Express Flying Canvas takes this great idea to the next level. Consequently, it is the biggest display of the airline’s cultural pride so far.
Teamwork in the Skies
Next, you should know that a huge project needs great teamwork. Therefore, this project is the result of a long partnership. The airline teamed up with the Kochi-Muziris Biennale. This is India’s largest international modern art show.
Initially, the two groups worked together on a smaller tail art design. Because of that early success, they decided to create this massive wrap for the 2025–26 event. Thomas Varghese, CEO of the Kochi Biennale Foundation, explained why this matters:
“The Kochi-Muziris Biennale has always celebrated art crossing borders. We bring modern art out of galleries and into daily life. Through this partnership, that vision literally takes flight. Above all, we are proud to see art soaring in the skies and starting conversations.”
Changing How We Travel
Ultimately, an airplane is just a machine to get us from Point A to Point B. However, this initiative proves the journey itself should mean more. Siddhartha Butalia, the Chief Marketing Officer at Air India Express, shared his thoughts:
“Art is a powerful universal language. For instance, it crosses borders and connects people in special ways. This project shows how we view travel. It is not just a trip. Instead, it is a chance to experience and connect with different cultures.”
