Oman Air Takes Delivery of First 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter

The delivery of the first 737-800 Boeing Converted Freighter (BCF) to Oman Air has been announced by Boeing and Oman Air. This marks the initiation of the order, representing the carrier’s inaugural dedicated cargo aircraft. The cargo volume of Oman Air Cargo experienced a substantial 42 percent increase in the first half of 2023 in comparison to the corresponding period in 2022. This growth is attributed primarily to the expansion of capacity within its passenger airplane fleet.

The 737-800BCF, with its capability to transport up to 23.9 tonnes of freight over a range of 3,750 km, is expected to play a pivotal role in sustaining the ongoing expansion of cargo capacity. Oman Air expressed their anticipation that this freighter will contribute significantly to the development of the air cargo logistics sector not only in Oman but also beyond. The aircraft is slated to be stationed at the strategically positioned Muscat hub, enhancing Oman Air’s connectivity between East and West.

According to Oman Air, “The 737-800BCF brings the right payload and range to complement Oman Air’s passenger fleet with dedicated cargo capacity.” Kate Schaefer, the Vice President of Boeing Commercial Modifications, conveyed, “We are honoured to partner with Oman Air Cargo to support their operation with a proven and reliable freighter.”

The 737-800BCF is constructed on one of the industry’s most efficient and reliable platforms, catering to the needs of customers responding to heightened cargo demand, fleet optimization, or the replacement of aging freighters. Compared to the previous generation of standard-body freighters, this fuel-efficient aircraft boasts up to 20 percent lower fuel use and CO2 emissions per tonne.

Taikoo (Shandong) Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd. (STAECO) undertook the touch labor for the freighter conversion, marking a crucial step in the aircraft’s journey to operational readiness.

Oman Air Cargo, established in 2009, has emerged as a prominent air cargo carrier in the Middle East, earning a global reputation for delivering high-standard products and exceptional customer service. The carrier is recognized for offering tailored solutions to meet diverse freight transportation needs, including the transportation of special commodities such as pharmaceuticals, fresh produce, valuables, and dangerous goods.
